In spring 2009, Herbert Brandl (born in Graz in 1959) took to working on a group of monotypes. Presently, the series comprises 127 sheets, and the artist has not yet ceased to explore the subject of - Untitled - mountains. The entire series will be presented in the Albertina in autumn 2010, where it will be juxtaposed with works of the same subject from the Albertina’s holdings.

 
Brandl’s monotypes are filigree constructs that seem to have been captured on paper with quick strokes in the very instant between emergence and disappearance. It is particularly from 2000 on that the artist’s love for the mountains has found its expression in serial works. He has fathomed the subject in various techniques and formats and is always concerned with the transformation of his motif into colored spatial and structural formations. Brandl is interested in his works’ oscillation between determined opposites of form and content.
