Philip Guston (1913, Montreal - 1980, Woodstock) was a leading American artist of the post-war period .
He worked in very different styles, moving from Abstract Expressionism to a disturbing figurative realism. His work is characterised by an immense aptitude for transformation, with drawing as its motor. He explored new modes of expression with the drawing pencil first, and was intensely engaged with European art and culture.
