THE COLLECTION OF THE ALBERTINA
THE PERMANENT COLLECTION
In spring 2007, one of the greatest European private collections of classical modern art came to the Albertina as a permanent loan from the Rita und Herbert Batliner Foundation in Liechtenstein. The assembled works illustrate an exciting chapter in the history of art: the development from figurative to abstract painting.
THE GRAPHIC ART COLLECTION
The Albertina safeguards one of the most important and extensive graphic art collections in the world. Founded by Duke Albert
of Saxe-Teschen (1738-1822), the passionate art collector after whom the Albertina is named, the priceless collection comprises
50,000 drawings and watercolours, and some 900,000 prints ranging from the late Gothic period to contemporary art.
THE ARCHITECTURAL COLLECTION
Among the 50,000 plans, sketches and models in the Architecture Collection are bundles of manuscripts and materials from the
estates of Francesco Borromini, Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, Adolf Loos and Lois Welzenbacher, and many other important
architects. The collection also features architectural models by Otto Wagner, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Alvar
Aaalto.
THE PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLECTION
As an extraordinary treasure trove of visual knowledge, the Albertina had also been gathering photographs since the middle
of the 19th century. Yet this was a fact that became common knowledge again only once the photographic collection was properly
reconstituted in 1999.The Collection is complemented by the historic stocks of the Langewiesche Verlag publishing house and
the Austrian Federal Education and Research Institute for Graphics in Vienna.
The Albertina’s Picture Database
The Picture Database of the Albertina Museum presents the main works
of the Graphic Arts, Photographic and Architectural Collections.
The historic archives of the Poster Collection are to be found online in their entirety. This database allow for a quick orientation
about the museum’s extensive holdings.
