Landscapes. From Albrecht Dürer to Paul Klee

From 5 March 2021

This ALBERTINA MUSEUM exhibition invites the public to stroll amongst richly varied landscape paintings from five centuries. From the beginnings of the autonomous landscape in Dürer’s era, the historical arc traced here encompasses Brueghel, Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age, Canaletto’s late-Baroque vedute, the highly effective landscape studies by Poussin and Lorrain, and key works of romantic landscape painting along with exemplary 19th-century Austrian watercolors such as Jakob Alt’s famed Viennese cityscape.

The majority of the works featured here were acquired by the founder of the ALBERTINA MUSEUM’S original collection, Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen (1738–1822), who took a special interest in large-format, painting-like landscape drawings of the late 18th and early 19th centuries: it was both for their artistic qualities as well as out of nostalgia for his Saxon homeland that he collected landscapes by Adrian Zingg and his pupils. And above all during the final years of his life, Duke Albert concentrated on collecting landscapes as such—of which a high-caliber selection is presented here.

The exhibition is on view from 5 March until 30 May 2021.
