Addressing Conflicts with Art

KUKON – Addressing Conflicts with Art

Conflicts at school—be they among students or between educators and students—take a heavy toll on everyday school life: alongside being strenuous for the affected parties, they also take up valuable time. But it wouldn’t be possible for any school class or team to take shape without a certain degree of friction, and conflicts also play a significant role in personal development as well as in finding one’s own position within a group.

An important tool in dealing with conflicts is “appropriate” communication—and communication is the core competency of the ALBERTINA MUSEUM’s Art Education Department. This is why we initiated KuKon – Mit Kunst Konflikten begegnen (– Addressing Conflicts with Art). This program combines conversations about art in front of exhibited artworks with communication training. In small groups, school students are sensitized to the nature of conflicts in the interest of helping them better understand just what conflict is.

Alongside art-historical content, students take away basic knowledge about group dynamics and processes as well as conflict resolution strategies. Creation of a group work in the studio rounds off this program.
