Middle School | Artists on the run
In this educational tour, the ALBERTINA Museum offers school classes an opportunity to view the exhibition Monet to Picasso from what’s currently still an unfamiliar perspective. In focus are works by artists whose lives were strongly impacted by circumstances that forced them to seek refuge elsewhere.
Chagall, Magritte, Giacometti, Picasso – many artists from the Monet bis Picasso exhibition were confronted with a need to escape in some way. They fled their home countries in haste, went underground as emigrants, were compromised in their artistic activities by political events, or were forbidden to travel.
On this guided tour through the exhibition, the participating school students explore the various reasons why 20th-century artists were compelled to flee and emigrate while attempting to comprehend how such flight and the associated losses would affect their own lives. What does it mean to be forced to leave your home? And what things change in an affected individual’s life?
What did it mean for the artists featured in the exhibition, and how did it impact their work?
In the studio, the school students face the challenge of being forced to explore new creative paths as artists. What to do when familiar motifs are out of reach, or when the usual variety of materials is no longer available?
